Why don’t people believe in God?
Monday January 14, 2008
Before we begin, it’s important to clarify what is meant by saying someone believes in God. For the purposes of this discussion, I’m going to define a believer in God as a Christian – as Christ follower. This is someone who has fully trusted in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins (Romans 10:9,10).

There is a lot in the Bible that proves it is historically true. Much of the Bible can be proven true historically by simply reading some cross-references. A cross-reference would be a source (i.e. book or website) that records the same thing the Bible records. However, you need to make sure these sources are credible which would mean they are written by teachers, historians, archeologists…people who you can trust are writing factual information.

The short answer is that you do not have to go to church in order to be a Christian. The Bible tells us that we merely believe in Christ’s death on the cross and accept Him into our lives in order to be a Christian. However, God did not make any of us to go through this world alone, and realistically speaking, it is nearly impossible to grow in your relationship with Christ without also being involved in a Bible believing church.

When I was 12, I trusted in Jesus and realized I needed him in my life. Unfortunately, I didn’t stay on the path that He had for me. I turned to drinking, boys, and proving my intelligence to everyone.

If you knew my life well, you may be tempted to ask the question: Why did God choose such an ungrateful, ornery, and selfish guy like me to be his son? You’ve got me, but He did and I’m a living example of God’s truly amazing grace, patience, faithfulness, and love.

The path I walked was not unlike many I have heard, but that doesn’t change how miraculous God can be to each individual.

I grew up in a small town near Grand Rapids (a.k.a. The Bible Belt of Michigan). Almost everyone went to church including my family. I always knew about God and the Bible.

Let’s put it this way, I was the type of guy growing up who thought I had it all figured out. Good grades, good behavior, and the respect of my parents and teachers were all a part of my life. Growing up my parents told me about God and Jesus but none of it was very real.
